If it ain't Fugly ... it ain't worth sticking your pistol in it!
I had resisted doing an IWB holster for the longest time. In-the-waistband holsters are all over the place in the gun world, and to be honest, they can get quite pricey. I felt that if I was going to throw my hat in the ring, I had to do it the Dragon Leatherworks way ... functional, comfortable, sturdy as hell, and costing less than any other IWB holster.
The one thing I didn't care about was looks. Appearance matters very little when you stick the holster down your pants (hiding well over half of the holster) then cover the gun (and the other half of the holster) with your shirt. At that point, who gives a damn what it looks like? You can't see it, so looks are one less thing to worry about.
So my prime concern was functionality and comfort. The Fugly is 100% leather, heavy-duty riveted construction, with no plastics. So I set out to design the IWB holster to hold its shape using only leather, and to feel comfortable against skin when sticking it down your pants. Insuring a fast draw was also an important factor.
To accomplish all of this, I made it differently than the other IWB holsters on the market. Since it didn't need to be pretty, the smooth side was made to go against the gun, with the sueded side against your skin. This lets the holster feel cotton-soft against you, and the smooth finished surface of the leather gets waxed so as to provide the least amount of friction possible when you draw while still holding your gun snug.
To make sure it didn't collapse from the pressure of your belt, I molded and folded a flap into which I cut slots for your belt to pass through, and dyed it so it blends in with your belt. This one-piece construction increases structural rigidity, and keeps the mouth of the holster open so you can easily draw and re-holster with only one hand - no need to hold the holster open to insert the gun. All this without any plastics! Now you can brag about being "green" and not using any of the world's oil to help carry your pistol!
No other all-leather holster that we know of can claim to support a ten-pound barbell on the holster mouth without collapsing!
The Fugly IWB holster is constructed completely in 8 oz. (1/8" thick) saddle leather stock and nickel-plated brass rivets. It's designed to handle everything from a compact to full-sized semi-automatic pistol, as small as a Makarov or Walther PPK, up to a 1911, and every size in between.
So why do we call it the Fugly? Because its freakin' ugly! But who cares? No one else should ever see it!
